BEE is working on a new initiative (motivated in part by the recent and ongoing Black Lives Matter movement) where graduate students and faculty in economics and adjacent fields visit local majority-minority high schools to share their professional interests. Economics carries a pervasive and alienating misconception: it is about money. By introducing high school students to economics, we hope to shine light on its relevance to student interests, their coursework, and foster diversity in our field.
During Fall and Spring 2021, we rolled out our pilot program at Berkeley High School and Applied Research Methods classes at De Anza High School. Graduate students and faculty participated in a panel series, where the weekly hour-long panel is themed by a particular issue, including race, education, and democracy. This was followed by an opportunity for graduate students to participate in a mentorship program with BHS and De Anza HS students.
