2022 Initiatives

In expanding our vision to focus on inclusion in the field of economics more broadly, since July 2021 BEE is taking concrete steps to develop new programming that supports our updated mission statement.

These include:
  1. Curricular reform efforts to integrate discussion of colonialism and slavery in the first year PhD sequence, as well as efforts to include experts and insights from other social sciences with a longer history of studying structural inequality.
  2. Antiracism reading group: the group will initially have some training/learning and reflection based sessions and then move into a reading group that is more centered on research and race within the field of economics.
  3. Research grants for graduate students researching topics related to social justice, to support scholarly work related to diversity in inclusion.
  4. Graduate School Admissions Mentoring for underrepresented minority students interested in applying to an economics PhD program including Berkeley.
